Merck's experimental AIDS vaccine fails (AP) AP - In a disappointing
setback, a promising experimental AIDS vaccine failed to work in a
large international test, leading the developer to halt the study.
Merck & Co. said Friday that it is ending enrollment and vaccination
of volunteers in the study, which was partly funded by the National
Institutes of Health.

- Afghan elders have given safe passage to thousands of volunteer
vaccinators immunizing children against polio in Afghanistan's violent
south, a region health workers haven't worked in for months, UNICEF
said Saturday.


Cholera spreads to Iraq's south (AP)

- Cholera was confirmed Friday in a baby in Basra, the farthest south
the outbreak has been detected. Officials expressed concern over a
shortage of chlorine needed to prevent the disease from spreading.

CDC’s Global Health Odyssey Invites Public to Smithsonian Museum Day
2007The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Global
Health Odyssey opens to the public for the first Saturday ever on
September 29 in conjunction with national Museum Day, sponsored by
Smithsonian Magazine. Special Saturday hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Admission and parking are free, with driver’s license or passport
required for entry.

U.S. Life Expectancy Hits New High of Nearly 78 YearsA child born in
the United States in 2005 can expect to live nearly 78 years (77.9)
– a new high – according to a report released today by the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, “Deaths: Preliminary Data for
2005.”

US Declared Canine-Rabies Free, CDC Announces at Inaugural World
Rabies Day SymposiumFor the last several decades, state and local
public health authorities in the United States have been working

NIH-Funded Scientists Solve Genetic Code of Parasitic Worm that Causes
Elephantiasis - September 20, 2007More than 150 million people
worldwide are infected with filarial parasites — long, thread-like
worms that can live for years inside the human body and cause severe,
debilitating diseases such as elephantiasis. Mosquitoes spread the
larvae of these parasitic nematodes from human to human, placing at
risk more than a billion people who live in places in Africa, Asia and
Latin America where filarial parasites thrive.

New Publication Helps African Americans "Make the Kidney Connection" -
September 20, 2007The National Kidney Disease Education Program
(NKDEP), an initiative of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has
created an educational brochure tailored specifically for African
Americans at risk for kidney disease. The brochure — "Kidney
Disease: What African Americans Need to Know" — explains the
connection between diabetes, high blood pressure, and kidney disease,
and encourages those at risk to talk to their health care providers
about getting tested.

Scientists Identify Cause of Job’s Syndrome - September 19, 2007The
rare immunodeficiency disorder known as Job’s syndrome is caused by
a specific genetic mutation that both overstimulates and
understimulates the human immune system, leading to harmful bacterial
and fungal infections and the physical features characteristic of the
syndrome, according to two independent groups of scientists, one from
the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the other from the Tokyo
Medical and Dental University.

WHO stresses need to ensure the safety of children's medicinesThe lack
of thorough and reliable clinical data on the way medicines affect
children requires strengthened safety monitoring and vigilance of
medicinal products. This is the fundamental message of Promoting
safety of medicines for children, released today by the World Health
Organization (WHO).

UNITAID celebrates major achievements in first year of existenceIn the
year since it was established, the international drug purchase
facility UNITAID has managed to reduce the price of HIV treatments for
children by almost 40%, and those for second-line antiretroviral (ARV)
drugs by between 25% and 50%. In collaboration with the Clinton
Foundation, UNITAID has also delivered more than 33 000 paediatric
treatments against HIV/AIDS and is on course to meet the needs of 100
000 children by the end of 2007.

Former UN Messenger of Peace to fight tuberculosis as a Stop TB
AmbassadorAnna Cataldi, who served as UN Messenger of Peace from 1998
to 2007, has joined the global fight against tuberculosis (TB). Ms
Cataldi, who was today appointed as an Ambassador of the Stop TB
Partnership, will raise awareness worldwide about the unfair burden of
TB on refugees, migrants, people living in poverty and other
disadvantaged groups.
